Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to determine the housing and maintenance needs of specific species and breeds of birds.This unit applies to individuals working in companion animal industry organisations that include aviaries and bird rooms as part of their operations. These individuals analyse information and exercise judgement to complete a range of skilled activities and demonstrate deep knowledge in a specific technical area. They have accountability for the work of others and analyse, design and communicate solutions to a range of complex problems.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.NOTE: The terms 'occupational health and safety' (OHS) and 'work health and safety' (WHS) generally have the same meaning in the workplace. In jurisdictions where the national model WHS legislation has not been implemented, RTOs must contextualise the unit of competency by referring to current OHS legislative requirements.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Determine housing needs
  • Identify housing requirements of particular species and breeds, and provide appropriate security and housing
  • Determine husbandry practices of species, and provide appropriate resources
       
Element: Maintain enclosures
  • Develop maintenance plans for aviaries and bird rooms according to WHS requirements and environmental considerations
  • Conduct maintenance activities according to maintenance plans and industry standards
  • Select and use appropriate tools, equipment and materials, including personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Implement environmentally safe and effective measures, including hygiene standards and infection control procedures
  • Document maintenance plans and activities
       
Element: Identify and control pests and report notifiable diseases
  • Identify pests and implement appropriate control procedures
  • Maintain pest control and disease records
  • Identify notifiable diseases and document and report in accordance with legislative requirements

Assessment Tasks
